Day 8: Newfoundland

Documentary, Maritime Roadtrip 2016

“Nice camera, jackass!” Was the first thing a Newfie said to me when I went inland from the port.  I pulled over in a small town to take a landscape photo, and this was yelled by a man standing on his porch down the road.  It unfortunately set the tone for the rest of the trip to St-John’s.

Up until Newfoundland, the trip had been quite enjoyable, but two days into my Newfoundland stay, I feel like I ought to have stayed in Cape Breton or Prince Edward Island.

I met a young German couple hitch hiking in Gros Morne, and agreed to take them to Tera Nova. I made lots of friends aboard the Atlantic Vision, but had been feeling lonely since travelling inland.  I made small talk talk for the better part of an hour, but they didn’t seem too chatty and eventually both fell asleep.  They didn’t wake up until we were nearly there, when a stone kicked up by a van several car lengths ahead of me smashed my windscreen.

In the end I made it to Cape Spear. And I still have some camping to do in Newfoundland, but I doubt I’ll return anytime soon.  I don’t know what I was expecting to find coming out here, but I haven’t found it.

I am a film photographer based in Prince Edward County. I make images of people, places, and things - you know, nouns.
