That Three Letter Word

I think the most debated topic in photography, after gear of course, is whether or not it’s “art”.  I think I’ve come up with the perfect way to decide whether or not something is art, well, perfect for me anyway.  Your work is art if you want it to be.  For example, I know a tattoo artist who, when starting out, did large black tribal tattoos.  He didn’t consider those art, but he did consider his other, more creative, tattoo work art.  So if some photographers want to call their photographs art, then it is.  Same goes for those who sculpt statues or knit sweaters for corgis.  If they feel it is art, and their artistic voice speaks through it, then so be it.  I, however, do not feel comfortable applying that word to what I do.  I don’t see my photography as an attempt at art.  I feel it’s more a kin to documentation.
