I recently took on a photography job, which is not my style. Still, when the pay included beer, it was hard to resist. Barley Days Brewery is working on a new website, and wanted a few photographs made for it.
Barley Days has been working toward reinventing themselves over the last year and, more importantly, to find their voice in the beer world. Brett, the brewmaster, has been expanding their line, making the kinds of beer he wants to drink. They offer a dark ale, an oyster stout, a cherry porter, and now a black lager and a black IPA. When I asked him if he was worried that having so many dark beers might cannibalize his market, he just smiled and said, “I like dark beers.”
So often my editing, and sometimes even my shooting, is biased by what I think other photographers or people want, or will find interesting. But those are all lies. It’s important for me to remember to be honest and sincere in my photos. That’s my first resolution for my photography this year.
